Luke Yun Zhang is a distinguished New Zealand-born pianist, violinist, and music educator, currently a PhD candidate at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music. His research focuses on the piano works of Aleksander Michałowski, exploring their connections to Polish nationalism, Romanticism, and the influence of Chopin.

Luke began his musical studies in 2014 under the guidance of Michelle Park (Hansori Music) and has since established himself as a versatile performer, excelling in both solo and ensemble settings. Since 2015, he has served as the first violinist of the Hansori Music String Ensemble, performing extensively in chamber and orchestral settings, including concerts at the Sydney Opera House.

His achievements include numerous awards in competitions, with performances spanning Australia, China, and South Korea. He was a recitalist in the 2024 Lev Vlassenko Competition, awarded First Prize in the 18th Gimpo Philharmonic Music Competition, and performed Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1 with the Gimpo Philharmonic Orchestra in Seoul. In 2025, he earned Third Prize at the Chopin Avenue International Piano Competition (Professional Concerto). His performance career has taken him to esteemed venues such as the Sydney Opera House, Melbourne’s Hanson Dyer Hall and Melba Hall, and Seoul’s Gimpo Art Hall.

His academic journey includes a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music Studies from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he studied with Daniel Herscovitch and Stephanie McCallum. He later completed a Bachelor of Music (Honours) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music under Glenn Riddle. Currently, he is pursuing his PhD under the supervision of Konstantin Shamray and Kenji Fujimura. At the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, his accomplishments have been recognized with several scholarships, including the Ellinor Gertrude Harris Bequest and the Rosemarie Kenny Prize.

Beyond performance, Luke is a dedicated educator, teaching piano, violin, and music theory at all levels. His students have achieved success in competitions, AMEB examinations, and scholarships.

Currently based in Sydney and Melbourne, Luke remains committed to expanding his artistic horizons and sharing his passion for music with a global audience through performance, research, and education.
